I fiddle with the lock as I slip my cell into my back pocket after texting Jaden. The dang door always sticks. I give the bottom of it a small kick, and it pops right open.

I’m a little surprised that my mom isn’t standing right in front of me with a suspicious look on her face. I shut the door quickly behind me, turning all the locks so I don’t get an earful when my mom pops up any moment now.

She’s normally front and center if anyone tries to even get close to the house. Maybe she’s in the shower or something. I wouldn’t be surprised if she set booby traps for when she was showering. She’s that paranoid about people watching us. The odd silence of the kitchen actually begins to make me worry.

Twinkles pokes his little head around the corner. I drop to my knees and reach my hand out in a gesture for him to come closer. He does, and I scratch under his chin. I hate that I had to give him up. I’d grown attached to him so quickly.

I think that might be a bad habit of mine, maybe even a pattern. I see something, I like it, and then I take it and try to make it mine forever. It didn’t work with Twinkles, and, unfortunately, it hasn’t worked with Father Niall, either.

There’s no way he’ll ever be completely mine. That thought has haunted me since I walked away from him. Worse, he let me go. I kept thinking he’d call after me, but he didn’t. I’ll never see him again unless I go back to the church. I don’t think he has a way to track me down, though I guess my school uniform did give away some clues as to who I am.

Once I’ve rubbed Twinkles’s belly until he’s frisky, I continue into the house toward the living room. It’s dark in here, but that’s nothing new. My mom doesn’t keep many lights on, because, according to her, the people she insists are watching us would be able to see in better if it were well lit. I roll my eyes at how ridiculous she can be sometimes. No one is watching us. No one cares about our little house or boring lives or even our super cute and now-frisky kitten. Yet, as I edge farther into the living room, I do have the distinct feeling that I’m being watched. Did I just hear a clicking noise?

“Holy shit!” I scream when something brushes my legs.

Twinkles lets out a loud meow and goes running when I accidentally startle him. “Sorry Twink--ahh!” I scream again when two figures come rushing down the hall. Bright light floods the room, and I blink against the glare as I stare in shock at Father Niall standing there with my mom.

Niall shoves something away inside of his coat.

“What are you doing here?” I breathe out, trying to get over my initial shock. How’d he even get in here?
